Maintaining healthy digestion during the holidays can be a challenge due to indulgent meals and changes in routine; however, there are several strategies you can use to support good digestive health. Since there are many strategies to consider, this will be a two part email...I know I prefer to have time to digest information when there is a lot...no pun intended. Haha 😂
Eat Mindfully: Pay attention to what and how much you eat. Chew your food thoroughly and savor each bite. This will support with the digestion process (as digestion begins in the mouth) and has been shown to prevent overeating.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Proper hydration supports digestion, may prevent constipation, and at times we are actually dehydrated when we feel hungry - so reach for water first.
Include Fiber Rich Foods: Incorporate high fiber foods like vegetables, fruits, and legumes into your meals. Fiber promotes regular bowel movements and supports a healthy digestive system.
Moderate Portion Sizes: Be mindful of portion sizes, especially during holiday feasts. Overeating, especially with foods you don't typically eat, can put extra strain on your digestive system.
Include Probiotic Rich Foods: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut. Include kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, and other fermented foods in your diet. If you aren't a fan of these, click HERE,* create an account and look for Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic Complete or if you've ever been on prednisone or taken antibiotics, try Innate Response's Flora 20-14.
Limit Fatty and Fried Foods: High-fat and fried foods can slow down digestion not to mention cause bloating, gas abdominal pain and even diarrhea. Choose lean proteins and incorporate healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil.
Manage Stress: Stress can affect digestion. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to promote a calm digestive (and nervous) system .
Take Digestive Enzymes: If you have difficulty digesting certain foods, consider taking a digestive enzyme supplement to help break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Click HERE,* create an account and look for Pure Encapsulations's Digestive Enzymes Ultra and be sure to take with every meal. If you suffer from heartburn, you can try Pure Encapsulations's Digestive Enzymes Ultra with Betaine.
